Your Apollo 11

*This week’s blog is inspired by many events going on in my life and in the lives of those close to me as well as a commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11*

This past Saturday marked 50 years since the Apollo 11 landing. 50 years ago, two American astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, accepted the challenge of becoming the first humans in the Moon. It was during a pre-mission press conference when Neil Armstrong was quoted: ”I think we’re going to the moon because it’s in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It’s by the nature of his deep inner soul … we’re required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream.”

Challenges help strengthen us and reveal our inner potential. Think about a challenge you have faced. It could be a recent one, a significant one, or a minor one. Were you in danger of failing a class? Two months behind on rent with only $25 in your bank account? Unexpectedly a widow/widower with the future uncertain? Now, these challenges may not equal up to the challenge of going to the Moon, but still, they do require a great deal of strength and potential. Armstrong and Aldrin knew that being the first men on the Moon was their biggest challenge. Yet, they embraced it and made history. Are your challenges going to make you famous or leave behind something historical? I don’t know. They could. They could not. Most likely, the historical effect the challenge will have will be a personal one. Your life record. Your own history. Your own Apollo 11 landing.

If life was easy, we would have no fun. Seriously. Challenges can be fun. At first, we may not think so. But as you conquer it, you see sides of yourself you didn’t know you had. You build yourself up. You prove to yourself that you can do this. The beauty of a challenge lies within the conquering. For when we conquer that challenge, we feel accomplished. When we feel accomplished, we can take on anything life throws at us. So the next time you’re faced with a challenge— your Apollo 11— embrace it. Conquer it. Grow from it. What’s going to be your Apollo 11 landing?
